Esprit De Corps Riding Academy ~ Kauai
I have had the incredible honor of working with Dale Rosenfeld and her amazing herd of horses and Welsh ponies for the past year and a few months more. When we moved to Kauai 3 years ago I knew that I wanted to bring horses more seriously and frequently into my life. My son was interested as well so we started as apprentices in the program at Esprit de Corps Riding Academy. Twice a week for up to 5 hours each visit we are fully immersed in horse care and life at the ranch. The youth in the program learn everything there is to know about taking good care of the horses…from the bottom of their hooves to the tippy top of their poll…from the food they eat to cleaning up what comes out as waste after they’ve eaten. We learn how to be responsible, how to create trust, and how to be respectful and in turn gain respect. The horses teach us many lessons every time we’re with them; the most important having to do with paying attention and being in the moment. I’ve seen the love and acceptance that horses offer humans (most notably kids, because they don’t have hidden agendas with the horses) when they have a sense of peace and safety offered to them. As a result of this I’ve seen youth who came into the program a little on the introverted side transform like butterflies emerging from a cocoon with a new sense of self-love and empowerment. I’ve seen kids challenged with poor sense of direction and self become more present in their bodies and in their motivations simply by spending time in the presence of horses. And in case you’re wondering…horses have this effect on adults too!

[...] I continued searching and suddenly something ‘clicked’–no pun intended as I was still ‘googling’ to find what I was looking for! I found Franklin Levinson, known for almost 30 years as “The Maui Horse Whisperer”, whose web address reflected immediately what I felt I was looking for…www.wayofthehorse.org. The Way of the Horse! Of course…that was it. Someone was focusing on the HORSE…for the horse. I begain reading the many articles and essays available on Franklin’s site and I knew that without a doubt he was the teacher for me. It was so interesting for me to read Franklin’s words…they seemed to be my words. The thoughts and feelings I had been having, the intuitive truths that had been pulsing through me about the deeper connection between horse and human as partners in right relationship with each other resounded in every article I read. The biggest difference I could find between Franklin and me was that he was living and breathing it in his every day physical world and my experience was still largely in the intuitive world with a strong impulsion moving forward into my daily experience. I had been working for half a year at an incredible ranch here on Kauai where I could experience, ‘feel into’, and put into practice some of what I’d been feeling. I had learned (and continue to learn) so much about horses and their care…and I knew that if I wanted to delve in and completely immerse myself I needed to find a space where I could BE in the experience fully engaged with out the duties of day to day business. I had a sense that an experience with Franklin and the horses would be just the thing. I emailed him immediately and discovered that he was living in the Aspen/Snowmass area of Colorado…nestled in the Rocky Mountains. He offered what he calls “A Rocky Mountain Horse Vacation“…an immersion program designed especially to suit each individuals needs/desires. [...]
