I am honored to host every guest we’ve had on In Horse Harmony.  It behooves me (love that word, especially here!) to tell you our guest today is phenomenal in every sense of the word.  The work she has done to help us all learn about Wild Mustangs is informative, inspiring and moving beyond measure.

This is Episode 1 of a 2 part series.

Ginger Kathrens~The Cloud Foundation

In today’s episode we proudly welcome Emmy award-winning producer, cinematographer, writer, and editor Ginger Kathrens to Reach Out on In Horse Harmony.  Ginger shares the story of Cloud, the wild mustang colt that serendipitously chose her to follow his journey, since he was born in ‘95, through life as he has become a wild mustang stallion with the largest family band in the Pryor Mountians.

It became evident to Ginger over time that the two things wild mustangs value most is their freedom and their families.  Through Cloud’s story Ginger has learned much about the wild mustangs and the challenging life they face.  Listen as she explains why it’s been both a priviledge and a burden to watch Cloud’s story continue to unfold.

Come along behind the scenes with us as Ginger describes her experience filming for Cloud 3, “Cloud, The Stallion King”.  (Cloud 3 will air on Nature in May 2009)

Ginger’s first two films documenting Cloud’s life, “Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies” and “Cloud’s Legacy: The Wild Stallion Returns” air on PBS’s Nature series and represent the only on-going documentation of a wild animal in our hemisphere.

Ginger is the founder and Executive Director of The Cloud Foundation, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to the preservation of wild horses on our public lands with special attention on isolated, historically significant and genetically unique herds like Cloud’s.  She is an informed, impassioned, and entertaining speaker on behalf of wild horses.  We are blessed to have hosted her on Reach Out on In Horse Harmony!

Dear Kenneth Interior Secretary Salazar,

Interior Secretary Salazar and the Bureau of Land Management I’m asking you to stop the Roundups of Cloud and his Family!

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT’S (BLM) DECISION to continue THEIR plan to euthanize or hold in captivity thousands of wild horses and burros and ROUNDUPS ~ AT THE EXPENSE OF THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER.

The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act (1971) was created with the hope of managing healthy herds of wild horses and burros on healthy Western rangelands. With the goal of managing the sizes of these herds, the BLM believes that wild horses and burros consume unfair amounts of forage on BLM lands. “On March 3, 2009, it was stated by a BLM representative that the forage depletion on public lands leaves cattle with nothing to eat. Contrary to that statement, a Wild Horse Ecologist, Craig C. Downer, of Nevada, stated in his speech (Wild Horse Speech With Tables And Charts, Wild Horse Summit, Las Vegas, Nevada, October 2008) that wild horses and burros only consume a mere 5.6% of the forage consumed by livestock on BLM land. “

It is not necessary to hold these wild horses and burros in captivity or round them up for slaughter (an expense to taxpayers). THE Cloud Foundation OFFERS an Alternative Herd Plan & SOLUTION. (The Cloud Foundation Web) This was given to the BLM in June 2009.

The BLM holding costs for the BLM in 2009 are $33 million, and in 2014 it is estimated to be $85 million. This business plan will help unravel the problem that the BLM has created in gathering horses off the range land at the tax payers’ expense.

1. Stop the BLM from managing our wild horses and Clouds Herd to extinction.2. Halt all round-ups of wild horses until range conditions and herd numbers can be verified.
3. Return wild horses in holding to the 100+ herd areas (19+ million acres) that have been zeroed out.
4. Expand the Pryor Mountain. Wild Horse Range for Clouds Herd & protect herd at viable population level of at least 150 adult horses until range is expanded.

Sincerely thank you for any and all consideration to saving our National Treasure and Cloud‘s Herd and family.

saw both stories of cloud on pbs – maybe they shd be rerun now or run on other stations like animal planet that people watch – anyway several years ago ford motor company offered to blm to buy and maintain land i think in texas for mustangs in honor of their car – blm turned them down

Dont how many of you saw the movie spirit by steven spielberg – came out in 2002 – i think this movie which shows the wild mustang from the horse’s point of view and does tell the story of the mustang – copies shd be sent to all members of blm and others who might help

finally found some good news – madeline pickens has spoken with head of blm and is offering to buy federal land and rescue 30,000 horses being held on federal lands in holding pens and the blm has backed off on taking cloud’s herd

Dear Jan,
Thanks so much for your passion for Mustangs, our American Wild Horses.

You offer wonderful insight here; thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Debra

Postcard Campaign for ROAM Act
Congressional WH&B Postcard Campaign

WILL HER FAMILY SOON BE GONE?

In 1971, an unprecedented letter-writing campaign moved Congress to pass the Free-Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act, declaring “wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people; and that these horses and burros are fast disappearing from the American scene. It is the policy of Congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death ; and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of the public lands.”

Over the past thirty-eight years, the intent of the Act has been consistently ignored. The Department of the Interior continues to waste tax dollars on eradicating America’s wild horses and burros with aggressive removal policies favoring private interests over both law and the will of the people. Today, almost 19 million acres that the Act granted the Wild Horses & Burros have been taken away. There are more wild horses and burros now in government pens than in the wild. Recently, BLM began asking Congress for the right to kill them by the thousands or sell them openly for slaughter.

Please help tell our U. S. Senators we, the American people, want our few remaining Wild Horses and Burros to remain free on the land that was granted them in 1971, and on which they, and their ancestors have lived for centuries.

Four-color postcards have been purchased for a National writing campaign using a photo courtesy of Carol Walker – Living Images. It also has Wild Horse Annie’s quote printed across the bottom (front). “These horses belong to all the people of America and they exist on lands that belong to all the people of America.” – Velma “Wild Horse Annie” Johnston

These cards & applicable pre-addressed Senator labels will be provided FREE to all Host Organizations willing to get them written. NOTE:20every U.S. citizen has 2 Senators — i.e. every person needs to write 2 cards.

We need citizens of every state to send these cards urging their Senators to co-sponsor the current S.1579 bill. This is the Senate version of the recently passed House’s HR 1018 (R.O.A.M Act). We urge you to have all your friends, families (including children) and club members write cards to their Senators telling them how they feel about America’s Wild Horses and Burros.

The host organization, in each area, will be responsible for postage to DC (a postage donation jar on a table is recommended). Any monies collected, above the DC postage costs, belongs to the local participating host organization. Key to the success of this campaign is: the General Public must be asked to write their thoughts There & Then – No “take-home and do later” of postcards.

Contact: whbpostcards3@yahoo.com and request the Senate cards be mailed to you.

Please include: your name, postal mailing address, e- mail address, how many (x 2) and for what State(s) you want them labeled for.

I am fairly new to this Cloud but I fell in love with him. I was sad to find out that him, and other stallions’ herds, were captured. I want to know, is that still happening to those herds? Are they free, alive, or were they all auctioned off??

I watched cloud 3 on on Sunday oct 25 and was shocked to hear that the land management killed those incredible horses. My heart broke. Why in Gods name would they do that? There aren’t even any roads up there. Its absolute wilderness. They weren’t bothering anyone. This is the sickest thing I can imagine. I can’t even imagine how Ginger Kathrens must feel. Jean
