Study: How Horses and People Connect

While browsing the net today for fun and fascinating information on the Horse/Human Connection (one of my most favorite pastimes) I found an interesting article…and of course I needed to share it with you! Equally interesting to me was the fact that the article is written by a woman named, Dr. Ellen Gehrke. That just happens to be my last name, spelled the same way! This may not seem too unusual to some (Smith, Jones, etc.) but for us Gehrke’s, well we just don’t see our name floating around very often.

The article discusses research and data that is being collected to support what we already know…that horses and humans have a deep bond, a connection that is felt on many levels, and apparently is evident in the changes recorded in the horse’s heart rate while with their human.

Interesting article! I’ll be interested to hear of her studies with horses and humans in a situation that may be stressful for both. I know that horses have a calming effect from personal experience, however, what happens when they are taken out of their everyday environment? Also, there are some horses that act up when frightened, and others that internalize - what is the difference in their heart rates and the humans? Some questions to ponder :).
